“I decided to engage in Polish-Jewish relations because of the place where I have lived since I was 7: Rabka-Zdrój, a picturesque town in southern Poland. As a child I heard rather unfavorable opinions about the Jews: everyone around me said that I lived on a Jewish street, while my family occupies a building that used to be a mikveh. In 2011, a friend and I partially unearthed a staircase that used to lead to the synagogue and tidied up the area of the synagogue’s location. I don’t believe in coincidences – I think I am the person that should do something about the history of the former Jewish district in Rabka-Zdrój, a topic that has sadly been neglected in my town.”

Kamila and Tomasz have been married for 13 years, and for the past 16 years they have been taking care of the Jewish cemetery in Zduńska Wola, coordinating activities to commemorate and preserve the memory of the town’s Jewish community. They emphasize that their projects can only be implemented thanks to the support of former Zduńska Wola residents from around the world and the assistance of countless volunteers.
“Why do we do this? We were motivated by curiosity about the world, our dreams, but first and foremost by a firm inner sense of moral duty that tells us to respect the past and the people without whom this world would not exist.”
Kamila Klauzińska and Tomasz Polkowski
